Smile Tip | Get A Healthier Smile in 3 Simple Steps

Tip: Get A Healthier Smile in 3 Simple Steps

It’s important to take care of your teeth for a healthy smile. The eyes may be the window to your soul, but the mouth is the window to potential serious health problems such as heart disease, cancer and even strokes or diabetes. Studies have shown that 60% of people who lost teeth because of plaque also happened to have plaque in their carotid arteries. Commit to regular check-ups twice a year and follow this regimen, recommended by the experts at Lowenberg, Lituchy and Kantor, twice a day to keep plaque and cavities at bay:

Brushing:   Brush twice a day, for two minutes, in front of a mirror. Opt for a soft bristle brush to   effectively clean the tooth’s surface and pair it with toothpaste containing fluoride to help   strengthen the tooth enamel. Electric toothbrushes are also a great option because they time   2 minutes of sonic technology brushing for optimal cleaning.

Flossing:   Floss at least once a day and don’t forget to floss between back teeth. Although many choose   to skip this step, flossing is essential to remove plaque build-up in between teeth, where   brushing can’t reach. This is where many cavities begin.

Rinsing:  Rinsing twice a day can combat bacteria, bad breath and most importantly strengthen teeth.   Look for a mouthwash that does more than just freshen breath. As we age, our tooth enamel   naturally erodes so choose a fluoride rinse to decrease the likelihood of cavities.

Smile Tip | Whiten Your Teeth On Any Budget

TIP: Whiten Your Teeth On Any Budget

New York’s premier cosmetic dentists at Lowenberg, Lituchy & Kantor provide tips for brightening your smile within every budget. Whether you need a quick fix or want to invest in long-lasting results, the experts have a solution:

At-Home Bleaching
Crest Whitestrips are a great option for at-home whitening on a budget. The bleach within the strips remains in contact with the tooth enamel long enough to deliver noticeable results. Whitening strips combined with daily use of a whitening toothpaste are a good one-two punch to maintain a bright smile.

In-Office Bleaching
The most effective bleaching is done once a year in a dentist’s office. For a dramatic improvement, the dentist paints your teeth with a 35% concentration hydrogen peroxide gel, protecting gums and lips, then uses a high intensity light to activate the gel. This will effectively whiten teeth in just an hour.

Bonding
By adhering tooth-colored material directly to the tooth, your dentist can improve teeth that are chipped, crooked or stained at half the cost of porcelain veneers, resulting in an improved smile at an accessible price.

Veneers
Veneers are THE best way to replicate natural teeth. Your dentist applies a thin veneer of custom made, pre-formed porcelain directly onto each individual tooth’s edge. Porcelain veneers last anywhere from 10-20 years and takes just two visits to the dentist to transform your smile.

Smile Tip - How to Tackle Bad Breath When You're Dining Out

 Smile Tip
From

Have you ever been at a restaurant and realized that you have bad breath but there’s no gum or mouthwash in sight? The experts from Lowenberg & Lituchy provide discrete remedies to eliminate bad breath while at the dinner table:

Chew on herbs that garnish your plate:
Garnish is more than decoration – parsley neutralizes bad breath caused by sulfides given off by the bacteria in dental plaque

Order a cocktail:
Vodka kills the bacteria in the mouth that causes bad breath;
just avoid a sugary mixer because it will bind to teeth and trigger the odor-causing bacteria

Have a cucumber:
Place a slice of cucumber on the tongue and press it to the roof of the mouth for 90 seconds to reduce bad breath

Find natural mint:
If onion or garlic breath is your concern, finish the meal off by having a drink with mint such as mint tea which will help combat the odor

Smile Tip - Fact vs. Fiction

The Experts Dispel Common Dental Myths

Myth:  A hard-bristle toothbrush is best for removing tartar
Fact:    Brushing too vigorously with a hard-bristle brush may cause irritation and erosion of the gums

Myth:  Chewing gum is bad for your teeth
Fact:    Chewing stimulates saliva production which helps flush your mouth of foods and beverages that can stain teeth

Myth:  Whitening toothpastes bleach teeth
Fact:    They don’t. Whitening toothpaste alone is not strong enough to achieve a whiter smile – it must be used in conjunction with other at-home whitening products or as a follow up to an in-office whitening treatment

Myth:  Women shouldn’t get their teeth cleaned during pregnancy
Fact:    Pregnant women actually need three cleanings during their term. This is due to high estrogen levels which increase blood flow throughout the body, especially to gums, putting them at greater risk of gingivitis

Myth:  Brushing is as good as flossing
Fact:    Wrong! Flossing twice a day is necessary for clean gums and dislodges food that is stuck which can cause bad breath

Myth:  Candy causes cavities
Fact:    As an adult, as long as you brush and floss twice a day, candy does not necessarily cause cavities

Smile Tip - 4 Fruitful Ways to Brighten Your Smile

Strawberries:
Rub strawberries on teeth or brush a paste of crushed strawberries and baking soda once or twice a week to make them shine. Thoroughly clean teeth afterwards to avoid decay from the sugar in the strawberries

Orange Peel:
Buff teeth with the inside of the peel or combine ground bay leaves and dried orange peel to create a paste that you can brush on your teeth to create a brilliant shine

Lemon Juice:
Adding a drop of lemon juice to salt or baking soda helps whiten and clean teeth. Just don’t use lemon and baking soda paste more than once a week; the acidic nature of lemon juice can eat away at the enamel

Apple Cider Vinegar:
Mix apple cider vinegar with baking soda to make a paste to brush onto teeth, or gargle with it daily before brushing to help remove surface stains
