Smile Tip - Saving Your Smile Could Save Your Life

TIP:  Saving Your Smile Could Save Your Life
The eyes may be the window to your soul,
but the mouth is the window to potential serious health problems

5 Warning Signs Your Mouth May Be Telling You:

Fiery Red Gums and Mouth Lesions: If they fail to heal with treatment, they may be a sign of leukemia, heart disease, stroke or diabetes

Yellow-Tinged Tissue: This could be a sign of liver disease

Eroded Enamel: On the insides of the upper front teeth, eroded enamel may be a result of bulimia or gastric reflux disease

Jaw Stiffness: If the joint that hinges your jaw and mouth together is stiff, this could be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis or TMJ

White Lesions: Particularly on the lower lip, floor of the mouth, and back sides of the tongue, the appearance of lesions may be indicative of mouth cancer. See a dentist immediately if this is the case.

Smile Tip - Fact vs. Fiction

The Experts Dispel Common Dental Myths

Myth:  A hard-bristle toothbrush is best for removing tartar
Fact:    Brushing too vigorously with a hard-bristle brush may cause irritation and erosion of the gums

Myth:  Chewing gum is bad for your teeth
Fact:    Chewing stimulates saliva production which helps flush your mouth of foods and beverages that can stain teeth

Myth:  Whitening toothpastes bleach teeth
Fact:    They don’t. Whitening toothpaste alone is not strong enough to achieve a whiter smile – it must be used in conjunction with other at-home whitening products or as a follow up to an in-office whitening treatment

Myth:  Women shouldn’t get their teeth cleaned during pregnancy
Fact:    Pregnant women actually need three cleanings during their term. This is due to high estrogen levels which increase blood flow throughout the body, especially to gums, putting them at greater risk of gingivitis

Myth:  Brushing is as good as flossing
Fact:    Wrong! Flossing twice a day is necessary for clean gums and dislodges food that is stuck which can cause bad breath

Myth:  Candy causes cavities
Fact:    As an adult, as long as you brush and floss twice a day, candy does not necessarily cause cavities

Makeover Your Smile in 1 Minute, 1 Hour or 1 Day...

Smile Tip from Lowenberg, Lituchy & Kantor

Tip: Whitening your smile instantly refreshes your appearance and there’s a method that fits into every schedule

1 Minute
Portable Self-Whitening – Quickly and discretely squeeze in an on-the-go whitening treatment with GoSmile Touch Ups

1 Hour
Power Bleaching – One treatment of the mild acid, hydrogen peroxide and high intensity light trio is a quick and dramatic fix. If you’re short on cash, try an over-the-counter option

1 Day
Veneers – THE best way to replicate natural teeth because porcelain veneers last anywhere from 10-20 years and take only two visits to the dentist to transform your smile

Smile Tip - 4 Fruitful Ways to Brighten Your Smile

Strawberries:
Rub strawberries on teeth or brush a paste of crushed strawberries and baking soda once or twice a week to make them shine. Thoroughly clean teeth afterwards to avoid decay from the sugar in the strawberries

Orange Peel:
Buff teeth with the inside of the peel or combine ground bay leaves and dried orange peel to create a paste that you can brush on your teeth to create a brilliant shine

Lemon Juice:
Adding a drop of lemon juice to salt or baking soda helps whiten and clean teeth. Just don’t use lemon and baking soda paste more than once a week; the acidic nature of lemon juice can eat away at the enamel

Apple Cider Vinegar:
Mix apple cider vinegar with baking soda to make a paste to brush onto teeth, or gargle with it daily before brushing to help remove surface stains

Smile Tip - Easy Ways to Maintain a Whiter Smile

To maintain a pearly white smile, avoid dark beverages such as coffee, tea and red wine all together! If you can’t live without caffeine or a glass of wine, apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the teeth prior to drinking to create a protective barrier – or chew on raw, crunchy vegetables such as celery and carrots to mechanically remove surface stains from the enamel.
